My Tree: Film Screening

February 12, 2023 at
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Reimagine Co. 206 Picadilly Street London, ON N6A 1S1

The following was sent to us by the London Chapter of the Council of Canadians and Independent Jewish Voices-London:

Many Jews around the world grew up with the tradition of tzedakah (often translated as “charity”) and dropping coins into the Jewish National Fund’s (JNF) famous blue boxes. We were told that this would help build a homeland for the Jewish people in Israel, and make the desert bloom. Many others, such as Toronto-based filmmaker Jason Sherman, had trees planted in their names in Israel as gifts for their bar or bat mitzvah.

What many of us didn’t know at the time, but that we would go on to discover, was that the JNF was playing a key role in displacing Palestinians from their lands.

My Tree by Jason Sherman centres on his trip to Israel to locate a tree that was planted in his name decades earlier. As the story unfolds, Jason’s encounters with Jewish Israelis and Palestinians takes on the character of a voyage of discovery and revelation. The film looks at the discovery of a destroyed Palestinian village and how this gives rise to questions of responsibility.

IJV-London warmly invites you to a screening of the film followed by a conversation with Jason Sherman about his excellent work on Sunday, February 12th at 2:00 PM Eastern Time

at Reimagine Co, located at 206 Picadilly Street.
