The following is from the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA). Join the faculty (UWOFA) and support staff (UWOSA) unions this Friday, October 24, at noon on the University College hill, to stand against the support staff cuts in Arts and Humanities at Western.

Greetings all,

You are invited join the rally! Western’s faculty and staff unions UWOFA and UWOSA are joining together this Friday October 24th at 12:00pm in front of University College (hill top) — to rally against the recent staff cuts in Arts & Humanities.

4 support staff positions were eliminated as part of a staff “restructuring” decision in A&H at Western. Not only have we lost 4 support people/positions, but many of the remaining staff have significantly increased workloads, as the new “team-based” model requires several staff members to stretch into coverage in other units. The layoffs have generated a climate of fear and loss, worries over workload, and erosion of trust in senior leadership at a time when confidence, partnership, and collegiality are more than ever requisite.

Our unions know that decisions like this have substantive negative impacts on students, staff and faculty — we’re already feeling the effects. And we worry that these cuts are the beginning of more like this to come.

We’re gathering together, students, staff, and faculty, this Friday — calling out the cuts and calling for better transparency, communication, and care for the people who are vital to the functioning of the Faculty and to its success in research, teaching, and service.
