Who:   LDLC and a broad community coalition 
What:  Solidarity event to collect non-perishable foods and grocery gift cards. 

These OPSEU workers have urgent basic needs in this Week 7 of their courageous strike. We are working working with a broad community coalition on a food drive: donations of grocery gift cards (of reasonably small amounts for distribution to individual members facing hardship) and non-perishable foods will be accepted. Cheque donations are also gratefully accepted; please make the cheque out to OPSEU Local 166.

During this event, OPSEU/SEFPO 166 members will be engaging in public outreach and an information picket.

Donations Also Needed for OPSEU/SEFPO Local 172 (Ingersoll)

Local 172, on strike at Ingersoll Support Services Inc., is a small, newer local that also requires donations. Besides cheques payable to OPSEU Local 172, they also welcome donations of water and Gatorade for their picket lines.

Parking: We encourage attendees to take public transit to lessen the strain on the East Lions Community Centre parking lot. We encourage volunteers to park on city streets where permitted to keep parking spots available.

KEY FACTS

• In 2024, 1.9 million people in Canada worked in industries dependent on trade with the U.S.
• From January to April 2026, 112,000 private sector jobs were lost.
• The federal government plans to cut up to 40,000 public sector jobs.
• The federal government launched a review of the Canada Labour Code in April 2026, and workers are worried it could weaken bargaining power and make it harder to fight for a fair deal.
• The right to strike is a constitutionally protected right in Canada.
• Corporate profits have hit a new record high at $210 billion in the first three months of 2026. That is billions of dollars in extra profit that the government is letting them keep.
• Unionized workers make about $7 more an hour than non-union workers, and they have better benefits, paid leave, and pensions.
• Most collective agreements are reached without a strike, but that only works when workers have real leverage.
