Join us on Tuesday, February 7th, 2023 at 11AM on UC Hill as we rally to end Graduate student poverty at Western.
With the rapid increase in the cost of living, it is clear that wages for graduate students and postdocs at Western has fallen well below the basic cost of living. This means that most of us are not being adequately compensated and are struggling to make ends meet.
The average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in London has risen to $1,675, a 28% increase compared to the last year. Yet, salaries for graduate student and postdocs have stagnated during this period.
This leaves most graduate students struggling to make ends meet, taking on other jobs or living off credit cards, student loans, or help from friends and family – all while the University reports hundreds of millions of dollars in excess revenues.
As a union, we believe it is high time that Western began paying its graduate students and postdocs a livable wage.
We urge you to join us on February 7th to make noise about Graduate Student Poverty and demand that Western increase our pay to keep up with the rising cost of living.
