Dear all members and supporters,
Our sister coalition in Alberta – the Friends of Medicare – has asked us all to help stop Alberta’s government from ending single tier public health care in Canada. They are working their hardest in Alberta but we need to be helping across the country. The situation is extremely urgent. As of Sept. 1 Alberta will bring in U.S. private health insurance and start to sell access to two-tier medicare, pushing most people back in line, moving physicians out of the public system to serve those who can pay, and bringing in the private insurance companies (which are currently banned under Canada’s medicare laws). The latter is, of course, the goal of the legislation. It will start in Alberta, but if they think they can get away with it, Saskatchewan and Doug Ford’s Ontario will follow. It truly matters.
On September 1, Alberta’s Danielle Smith government is rolling out private health care to end universal public health care and bring in U.S. style privatization. It has been 7-months in the making, yet the federal Mark Carney government has not yet stood up for the Canada Health Act.
